How is everything with you people, Great I hope.My son Richard and his friend and my wife Louise and myself are going to be on the island on 08/09/03 and will be on island about six days and was thinking of stopping by to say Hi. If you are going to be available I would love to stop by to visit and have you tell us about your adventure on the white cap. I have your whole trip printed out here at home. I have been following it for quite a while and enjoy reading about your adventure. Will you be writing a book when the trip is over? We will be coming in a 27 foot motorhome that I bought couple of months ago. It is a trial run for this motorhome and if it is O.K.on this trip, we will be going to new Mexico in nov. on returning from Aruba for a month or so. Got Cajun Spirit bottom all painted with one coat except under the rear pads, was saving the last qt of paint for a final coat. Turns out the "last can of paint" was Red VC Offshore... They would not take Mom's word, just like Guatemala, the women don't count and do not need body guards!!!, so you have to call from where you are for the Mastercard. EnRoute is now cancelled and the new replacement cards are on the way here. Blake Craig and I are to put the track on tomorrow (Wednesday) afternoon, the bottom is all pressure washed and needs some sanding before paint on Thursday and Friday. All is well here, Al Boily was in for a swim past Saturday,, brrr he had to sit in his hot tub with a rum to warm up. On the Rio we just sit in the shade with a rhum to cool off!!! Boats "in" went well, Al Boily is the leading contender for Man overboard award this early in the season!!! Just B Martin, Cudmore and Cajun Spirit left in the shed. Blake is at the Y Club but waiting for next Sat to launch. Re-Installing the track today (Sunday), and cleaning up the place. You are not missing much here, rained all week so far, cold as H_ll and temp only 5C brrr. Have not been able to do much work on Cajun Spirit, so it looks like we will not be launching on Saturday. Have repaired the damage to the track and it is ready to reinstall. Just too cold to go up and work in the shed, same again today. Couple of things... need Pat's daughter snail mail address to send CD of mast construction progress laast winter. Weeks delay just makes it boat launch at about the right time up here why launch and l;et her sit there for nothing anyway??? When we are plugged into shore power, the inverter turns into a battery charger automatically, the "invert" part is only used when at anchor or offshore when we require 110V, otherwise it should be off. I think it is the batteries, the start ones are 6 years old and the house bank I bought in Veracruz Mexico in Jan 2001, they were the best I could get at the time but not top quality stuff. Anyway just leaving for Halifax now. Another thing, please take down the Guatemala courtesy flag when you leave, no need to have it beat to hell all summer for nothing... Please check to see if the"heart interface 2000" panel (the one just to the right of the 12V electric panel) has the small green LED "on" at the "inverter button". If it is, it should be off (unlit) when shore power is plugged in. If there is no water coming in, fill up the starter bank, let them charge then un hook the + terminal from both batteries, that will disconnect that bank completely. For the "house bank" under the Q berth, disconnect the + wire on battery #1, and connect it to the + on battery #2. That will leave only one battery in the system, just make sure that Lube knows where the manual bilge switch is, because the automatic one will be disconnected. After you leave get Lube to disconnect from shore power, and only connect every week or so for a day. We figure these batteries are all finished, I am going to the Surette battery factory tomorrow, Thursday, in Springhill, and will have a chat with them about our problem. Going to Halifax to pick up Cindy, arriving from a week in Vancouver, so I can stop on the way over; may also go to check on the spinnaker repair also. Spring Thaw will be on the 19, 20 21 of June this year and Shediac-Summerside on the 14th. Been busy getting Cajun Spirit ready for launch, harbour iscompletely clear of ice as of the 22nd Apr. Now it will warm up!!! Get Pat to e-mail the mailing address for his daughter so I can send a CD of all the "mast in progress" pics I have. Well what to do with those batteries??? Well if something is setting off the alarm is that the Propane alarm? If it is I do not think it is the batteries unless they are making gas when they charge with low acid, like boiling or something. I will check around here for info. Anyway, please turn off the propane at the tank when you leave, that will solve the alarm thing if it is propane and I will deal with it when we go back in Nov. As for the batteries... You can disconnect the + terminal, and that will solve that bank problem, except the emergency bilge pump runs off that bank, the wire is on top of the fuel tank at the terminal on the bulkhead there naxt to the fuel pump. Just fill the batteries and disconnect them. The house bank, we can solve by moving the + red wire from the 1st battery, which is the one with the bad cell, and then hooking it up the + on the second house battery, leaving it to be the only one in the system. The SG on that one tested OK before we left, but Lube will have to check the bilge every now and then, in case we get a leak. I do not think buying new batteries and leaving them on charge all summer will solve the problem. Only other thing I can think of is ... forget all of the above, disconnect from shore power when you leave and have Lube or Emi plug in for a day or so every week... what do you think? All is well here, met with Jason at Saan, gave him the envelope, he was pretty happy. He looks well, and says he is doing good in school and likes his job. How is Pat coming along with his getting ready to leave the river? Have you got a date for leaving?? Let us know the schedule. The ice is all loose from shore now, and is just drifting around waiting for either a good tide or a strong east wind before it clears the harbour, sometimes it drifts back in with the tide, but I expect it will be clear in 2 more days or so. The old car on the ice in the Yacht Club basin is still up, but I think she will go through the ice in about three days or so, then they will tow her out and someone will be $1000. richer. Docks are going in May 3rd if the basin ice is all gone or at least broken up. Paul Sniveley has the Jr sailors this summer, another load off my back, and Donna Bowles is chair of Spring Thaw another load off, so I have the summer to myself. Have the J boat deck track off the port side and almost ready to put back on, all the holes are fixed so the never leak again. Will do the stbd side next week. We are in Mexico City, arrived at 11:00 today, met another sailor from Change of Pace on the same flight from Guate this AM, she is headed to Los Angeles, and then to Vancouver. David is off to Atlanta, we will meet him again in Toronto later tonight. There is a direct flight from here to Toronto but they would not let us change flights... Ah well so we only get 6 hours sleep tonight. LeRoy thought of something else, please turn off the propane tank when you leave for the summer, thanks. Will probbaly think of many more things we forgot, hope this is not the first sigh of Alhzimers... Thanks Evan we have 7 bags but we will have to all pile into Cindys car. only noon and we have a good start on the day already. We motored Whitecap over to a smapp river at 08:00 with Shang, and by 10:00 we had her new mast up and all fastened down with the rigging. Whitecap on one side and Jeff Phillips old stripped out Gulfstar on the other using our spinnaker haillards worked great. Yesterday they had a big get together at Crowbar for Mary and I and Carolyn and LeRoy, so it was after dark when we got home. Everything packed and ready for the shuttle tomorrow at 10:00. This afternoon we are having a b'bque on the deck, the French boat is heading for Cuba, and Robert and France (Rebelle) is leaving for Roatan, Nwe boats are coming in to take their places. We made it home safe and sound. It's good to be back but miss you guys already. Suppose to be a big storm tomorrow here. I guess flights were cancelled all day today in Toronto because they were getting it all day. Hopefully that mess will be over by the time you guys are coming through there. But the weather here is really cold.Booked your room at the Sheraton in Toronto. Dave should be able to check in when he gets there while he is waiting for you guys. Got a monkey wrench from Adios, gave her a full turn and the damm leak was gone... after putting up with it for two years. And all this time we thought it was from our crash encounter with the reef at Nicholas Cay last year... Stupido eh! Will e-mail tomorrow. Last night it was 66F and we damm near froze, first time blanket since Jan... Lou and Kookie cooked bread all morning today so they could get heat in the cabin!!! Will try to get some e'mails ready, but David hogs the laptop. Also trying to teach Lube some computer stuff so he can e'mail us this summer. Trying to rig up an anode to hang over the side just in case, also attempting to fix the leak we have, looks like wwe will use Johnny Williams sawdust tecknique... Well you nissed it. The taxi came to plck us up in a 1988 Kia with a 1.3 litre cylinder engine (Dave would have gotten a great laugh) Well it started at the bridge.. a minature horse was in the middle of the bridge just sitting there!! Then at the bottom of the bridge was a traffic jam. Buses and trucks just parked where they wanted too. The first time I every seen a cop on duty there. After a while they got it cleaned up and traffic started. Then the traffic was three lanes. On both sides of us was cars going the opposite way. First time I have ever seen that. The markets were very busy as it was fresh vege day. I am surprised that we didn't clip off a few going through. Further down the road they were paving the road. They pave just like they build docks down there. About a foot an hour!! We were held up there for a while, then off we went again. The taxi found it hard going up the hills but we made it. We then encountered a rain ,wind lightening thunder storm!! Couldn't hardly see. All the other traffic was stopped on the side of the road but we kept going. The two hour was up and we were only half way there!! The rain stooped and we found out there were kids playing on the road the driver swerved to miss them and kept on going. Didn't seem to fizz him a bit. Then we met a bull rumming down the rtoad chasing a guy with a mechetee. It was funny to see but I pitty help the guy if he got caught. Further down the buckets of rain started again thre driver went from 120 down to 20 but couldn't see a thing. finally arrived at the airport 4 hours later. There was cows and horses all over the streets just rooming around. Quite the site's. The 2 hour taxi ride was a joy ride and a experiecne I'll never forget. The good thing about was I tightened some muscels from hanging on and probably lost a few pounds from the heat. No air conditioning and the windows were up cuase of all the rain!! Well thgen we caught our plane. I laughed for ten minutes. The plane was soo small. It fit all of ten people!! Quite the ride. Finally got to Belize City. Couldn't get a hold of Lisa so we caught a cab in to the Princess. WOW it is beautiful!! Nicer than the Loyalist and cheaper than where we stayed the first night with breakfast also included!!! Arrived safely back on the Rio late Tuesday afternoon, all is well. Stopped at the hot springs in the gorge for a while, Rick enjoyed it says it was too hot... David is giving his parents the grand tour around the place, introducing them to everyone he knows... had lunch at Crowbar yesterday, and walked the bridge in the heat... 110F, going to be difficult when we get home. Too bad about Clyde, ah well I think he was almost 15 years old, mom will miss him under her feet when she cooks... and he outlasted Bonnie by almost a year. We made it to Mom and Dad's winter residence!! Quite the place!! The river ride was awesome!! The heat is unbearable. Heading back up to Belize City Saturday. Happy Birthday Michelle!!! We are in Placentia again, left South Water Caye at 07:15 today and arrived here at 12:15 it was v hot last night, Nicolle had to sleep on deck... Today almost no wind when we wound our way between the reefs and coral heads. Depths changed from 100+ ft to 12 in only 2 minutes!!! so we had to watch for the light blue water, finally got to Pelican Cayes and had a clear 50+ ft all the way here. There are five other boats in the anchorage, two are Canadian out of Quebec, Moon Spinner carries a CDN flag and that other one who never has a CDN flag up ever. Dick does not even bother talking to him even when he needs something!!! All is well, Yesterday we swam and snorkled all afternoon, today it looks like the same thing. Tonight will eat at a small cantina, where we bring our own wine, so we have a real French Chardonnay we picked up for US$6 in Belize City. Tomorrow we will try to make Livingston, if not we will spend the night in New Haven lagoon or the Mangrove Cayes a few miles further on. Man it is hot down here, we left Caye Caulker early yesterday AM, because no one could decide who or what we were going to have for breakfast!!! Instead sailed off for San Pedro and arrived at the anchorage at 10:30... to late for breakfast too early for dinner so we sailed down un charted water all the way to Cptn Morgan's Retreat for lunch. Wednesday, blowing like hell on the nose of course, we leave around 06:15 and have to power 3 hours. Guess what... the credit card was still there in the machine!!! Yesterday, a yachter came over, "are you rreally from PEI?" "I am from Hunter River" name David Black, mother and father live in K'town, also related to wayne Hickox in S'Side. They sail a Choy Lee 38 sloop, out of Clearwater, Fl. They are on their way down to the Rio Dulce for the hurricane season. They are coming along behind us today so we can give them info and tips. Think everyone is having a good time so far, tomorrow we will head east hopefully get to Bluefield Range for the night. Happy St Patricks Day, We are in Caye Caulker, left Belize City at noon, arrived here around 4PM. Went to airport to pick up Nicolle and Rick, thinking their plane was at 6.25 pm but it came in at 4 PM, so they took a taxi and we crossed paths on the highway... Got them a room at the Chateau Carribean for the night, not bad, we had the use of the room all day to do laundry and shower ourselves. The Radisson dock is an open roadstead, Saturday night was noche horribilis, as the wind was coming on our stern and every wave slammed under the stern quarter with a lou shuttering wack!!! In the morning wwe turned the boat around and guess what.... the wind came from exactly 180 deg for the second night... no wonder they do not have any boats there. Tomorrow we are going to San Pedro, Ambergris Cay anf from there will start heading east down the islands, maybe we may even make Turneffe and Glovers Reef this time. All is well, our guests are already sunburned and this is the first day. Have lots of pics, but will have to send them when we get back to the Rio Dulce. Having battery problems, but today we tightened the belt and it seems to be working better, but batteries not holding charge for more than 5 hr. The shits... We are in the anchorage with 10 other boats, one CDN from Vancouver, came over to say hello. We saw them on the Rio a few weeks ago. Todays ride was not fun, upwind all the way into 6 ft+ seas, we could only make 2.5kts at best, tried sails but just took us towards shore so we opted to push through. Mary says it was like an all day roller coaster ride... May stay here tomorrow, have to find Harry at the "Tree of Knowledge" we brought a qt of Gin for him. Need some more things please.,1 one of those CDN Tire battery post cleaner thingys, ours just fell apart today, the onr with the little sharp wires for cleaning the posts and the terminal ends. 2 Mom wants one of those orange juicers that you turn the fruit on to get juice, Imagine here we are in orange country and cannot find a juicer anywhere. 3 Suzuki part. We now need the centre seal for the crankshaft. There is a front seal then a bearing then a centre seal and bearing and then a rear seal and bearing. The centre seal is damaged and the base compression is going through it from one cylinder to the other. All the other inside parts are OK. but Oscar says to also get a spare impeller for her just in case we need one down the road... We will borrow Yankee Girl's spare 4HP outboard for the trip to Belize, we are ready to leave just waiting on the info on the Suzuki. One cell in battery A of the house bank did not take a charge and the test is in the red range, all the others are in the green. Even the old Surrette batteries for the engine starting are all testing in the green which is good. Since it is already noon, we will leave tomorrow early for Livingston, so we should be able to Zarpe out and get to Punta Gorda Belize in one day for check in. The trip plans have changed. Arriving in on the 16th of March @ 6:35pm, Belize City. hope to meet you there instead of over on the Cayes. Weather is very cold so we can't wait. Marc is doing well in the play offs so we may miss the Island Championships. Michelle is leaving for Florida next Wed. We stayed the first night on the way here at Finca Ixabel, a kind of eco hotel farm where everyone is on the honor system, you take a bottle of wine you mark it down. Owu accomadations were three tree houses, kind of neat. Will send pics when we get back to Whitecap later today or tomorrow. We will spend the night here at La Marina a mile up river from the town, and tomorrow head back to our dock. Got our passport visas stamped for another 90 days, also Mike and Vickie's and Carolyn and LeRoy´s. The UPS package is in Guate City, got word yesterday, so now we will get the gasket and the outboard will be fixed again mucho gracias. We have to phone them with further instructions. I sent two parcels. One went with Dave's nose pads and some screws. It is in Guat. City waiting for instructions for payment on duty and taxes. The other one went UPS exactly like you said last Thursday with a promise it would reach you by Tuesday. It cost $79.50 to send it that way so you better get it. I will phone tomorrow to check on it. The only thing in that parcel is the gasket with a value on it of $9.00. I will keep after both Purolator and UPS until I receive word that you have both packages. So make sure you let us know. When I talked to both of them they had no problem getting them to the Chiqui's store and the other place you told me to send the first one but they needed to know that the payment was there before they would release them. I tried to pay them by MC but they wouldn't except the card number over the phone. I will confirm with you my trip plans as soon as they are finalized in the next couple of days. I have a few questions, Are we waiting for one parcel or two? The one in Guate City I am trying to get them to forward down to Peurto Barrios which is only a 1 hr bus ride each way from here. Guate City is 5 hours each way... some new kind of "door to door" service that is!!! If there are two parcels, David's glasses and the gasket, which way did the gasket get sent?? What is in the parcels?? besides the above things? And why would they be holding one for customs in Guate City? DHL have never contacted us here as of yet and their phone just says "all our operators are busy" wish I owned that place we get the same answer for 5 days now must be really busy!!! Got to get that gasket soon, we are spinning wheels here now everything is done except the outboard, and it is hot down here over 100F today but at least we have a breeze. Windmill working fine putting out 4 to 6 amps in a light breeze, imagine we will get lots in a blow eh? Please check C Nicolle on the shipping and let me know ASAP please, Otherwise all is well.
